Title: Sticky Fingers
Date: May 07, 2013
With one hand on the loaded wire cart, the girl is standing in the grocery line eyeing the candy rack while her mother skims The Star. The girl reaches, takes, and pockets a Hershey bar with her empty hand. Nobody sees.
With groceries loaded, mother and daughter exit through the automatic doors. Inside the car, in the back seat, she pulls out her Hershey bar, and quietly removes the brown wrapper. Mother hears, and says, “What are you unwrapping?”
“Nothing.”
The answer is too quick, the girl’s voice too high, for her mother not to notice.
Again, the mother asks, as she pulls the car to the curb, turns and looks behind her. “What do you have?” And seeing, waits for the answer anyway.
“A Hershey bar.”
“Where did you get it?”
Silence.
“Where did you get it?”
“I took it from the store.”
“Then you must return it.”
“NOOOooo. They’ll be mad. No one saw. Don’t make me.”
“Yes, they’ll be mad. But it’s wrong to steal and right to return it.”
“Nobody saw me!”
“God saw you and that’s reason enough.”
The Hershey bar was re-wrapped, uneaten. They walked into the store together and waited in line at the customer service desk while the girl cried quietly.
The manager took the candy bar, saying he was glad she returned it, for otherwise he would have called the police. “Promise me you’ll never steal again.”
She promised, and although she was forgiven, she never has forgotten.
Let’s Pray: Dear God, bless us all who learn honesty through mistakes. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: Thou shalt not steal.
