Title: The Parenthood Club
Date: January 09, 2013
Childless Donny and Kathy were worried when their friends, Charlie and Jill, came for a visit with their twenty-month old baby. For the entire visit, the young parents focused their attention on the baby, and little to none on their hosts. Adult conversation was non-existent. In its place was a broken stream of chopped-up talk that revolved around the baby, who, by the way, refused to be controlled and kept touching everything.
It was an unpleasant and memorable visit. Donny and Kathy figured they’d lost their friends forever. A year later, after Kathy gave birth to Maeve, they suddenly understood the change in their friends’ behavior.
Surprisingly, Donny and Kathy had become members of a club neither knew existed – The Parenthood Club. Sure, they knew couples had babies, but they didn’t know, and couldn’t understand, what that change meant until it happened to them. They had to experience it. Parenthood changed them into different people. Maeve became their focus, sleep became prized, and selflessness became normal. They saw the world, and themselves, with fresh eyes. They had unexpectedly changed.
It’s that large of a life change that can overcome a new believer in God. It’s like entering a world they’d heard about, misunderstood, and couldn’t possibly comprehend, until they walked in themselves – until they experienced it.
Pondering belief from the outside isn’t enough. Only a heart touched by God’s grace changes, and only then can one begin to see.
Let’s Pray: Dear God, open the eyes of the spiritually blind that they may see Your light. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: Open your eyes.
