Title: The Chain
Date: February 09, 2013
A rural blizzard closed the schools, doctors, dentists, markets, and town government for the day.
She had to go to her office, so she drove the island’s slippery roads. Nobody was on the road. A cautious driver, she took her careful time. The slick was too much; her car slid, spun, and then struck a snow bank. She got out. No harm done, just stuck. It was bitter, blowing, and snow was piling up. She began walking a mile to the nearest house. A pick-up truck slowly approached her. In it was the enemy of her husband, and two of his buddies. The enemy had done time for smuggling, arson, and attempted murder. He had bellowed a warning at her husband after a legal incident, “I’m going to get you. I know where you live!” Natives advised the husband to “take it seriously”. The sheriff said, “Get a gun.”
His truck slowed. Recognizing her, he stopped. The three men got out, and approached. She recognized him. There was nowhere to run, and nobody to hear her scream. The men eyed her and her car. One rummaged for a chain. Saying nothing, they hooked her car to the truck, put the car in neutral, and hauled her out. They nodded to her and left.
We may be surprised by who God chooses for acts of compassion. It could be you.
Let’s Pray: God, clean our hearts. Let us be Your tools. Hook us to those in need. No matter what we’ve done, or who we are, we belong to You. Use us. Amen.
Here’s a thought: Love your enemy.
