In December 2011, NASA announced that it had found “bulletproof” evidence of water on Mars. The Rover Opportunity found a vein of gypsum, otherwise known as plaster of paris. Gypsum is a mineral deposited by water. NASA scientists say the results, “just scream water.” What’s so great about evidence of water on Mars? If there was water on Mars, could there have been microbial life on Mars?
Perhaps no evidence of life will be found and perhaps no fossilized microorganisms discovered. But what if there are? What if NASA finds indisputable evidence of life outside of Earth? It would be mind-boggling and faith bending.
This is a theological question with implications perhaps as pertinent today as was Copernicus’ discovery that the Sun, not Earth, was the center of the solar system.
His heliocentric theory came to a head in Galileo’s time, when The Inquisition condemned the sun-centered solar system, and imprisoned Galileo for advocating it. It was too dangerous to consider that human beings, and Earth, were not the center of God’s universe. Vestiges of this view persist in the idea that in the universe, Earth alone supports life.
If evidence of life is discovered on Mars or elsewhere, it would mean that the belief in the uniqueness of life on Earth is invalid. It need not weaken anyone’s faith. God is able to do things of which we are ignorant.
Let’s Pray: Dear God, You are inconceivably more vast than our imaginations. If, when, life is discovered off Earth, help us praise You for Your creativity. Amen.
Today’s Thought Is: The Bible is a faith book, not a science book.*
