Title: Breath of Life
Date: February 08, 2013
Summer camp had been in session for weeks when the lately hired counselor arrived to finish out the season. On his way to his room to drop off his luggage, Tom saw another counselor swinging a boy around by his ankles. The camper slipped from the counselor’s hands and struck his head on the ground. He lay still. Tom dashed to help. The camper wasn’t breathing.
“Get the headmaster! Bring the station wagon!” Tom ordered as he palpated the camper and checked his pulse. Detecting a heartbeat, but no breathing and no indications of a spinal injury, Tom began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The headmaster arrived with the car. The backseat was folded down and the boy was carefully lifted in. Tom climbed in and continued the resuscitation. Tom checked the wrist pulse. Nothing. He checked the cardiac artery. Nothing. Tom said, “There’s no heart beat. I’m beginning CPR.” He worked on the boy for half an hour. As they rounded the corner into the hospital parking lot, the boy vomited, thus indicating a beating heart and breathing body. Tom had breathed life into that boy.
Take a deep breath. The air we breathe keeps us alive. We share this air. It is all around us, inside, between us, and necessary for life.
Like air, God is all around us, inside us, and between us. God’s breath gives all of us life. We share this life in common — this breath — in common. Let each breath be a prayer of thanks for life.
Let’s Pray: Dear God, be our breath of life. Inspire us this day. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: God’s breath gives me life.
