Title: Knocking on Heaven's Door
Date: March 14, 2017
There’s a man who has everything. After a life on Wall Street, he retired at 47, sold his Manhattan home, moved back to Connecticut and renovated the family cottage on Cape Cod. He’s a success – three smart kids in private school, a clever, loving and beautiful wife, good health, stylish clothes, posh cars and boats, lots of time, and gobs of cash – but there’s trouble in paradise. He’s dissatisfied. It’s the classic story of the kid who scores the goal, wins the prize, gets the girl and drives off in the Land Rover, but he knows something’s missing. This bewilders him. At everything he’s ever done, he’s won. He’s solved every problem, except this one, which as it turns out, is a classic story, too. He’s gained the world, but never found his soul. His solution, our solution to the same problem – where is God in my life? – is right inside our hearts, which is where he, and we, refuse to look; instead we hope for a pat answer, a quick fix, and then we move on to the next issue.
The Teacher said, “Ask, and it will be given; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive; the one who searches will find; and for the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Ask, search, knock – it’s easier than it sounds.
Let’s Pray: You’re not lost, God, but maybe we are. Maybe we don’t know how to ask, how to search, or where to knock. Teach us to ask, seek, and knock. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: Heaven’s door is within you; just ask, just seek, just knock, and open.
