Title: A Pleasant Illusion
Date: March 20, 2017
The chaplain walked down a hall in a nursing home and saw a woman in her nineties holding a cane and talking with a nurse. Seeing the chaplain, the old woman smiled. The chaplain smiled back. The old woman said, "Look who it is! What are you doing here?” The chaplain instinctively gave the old woman a hug.
The old woman announced, "Girls, let me introduce you to my mother."
"How are you?" asked the chaplain.
"Wonderful, now that you are here,” said the old woman.
They walked down the hall holding hands.
"How long will you stay?" asked the old woman.
"Not too long. I came to see how you are," replied the chaplain.
Near her room, the woman let go and walked on alone. The chaplain could have said, "My dear, I'm sorry, but you are confused. I am not your mother. Your mother is long since dead. Come back to reality, my dear. We are in a hallway of a nursing home and you are old enough to be my mother."
By playing along with a reality that existed only in the woman's mind, the chaplain provided comfort — fleeting comfort, yes – but comfort nonetheless.
No harm done. Good was done and compassion — the love of God — was given in a small way to a single child of God.
Let's Pray: Dear God, may we in some small way today, share Your loving kindness and compassion, and if not, may we be the one to whom Your loving kindness is shown. Amen.
Here is a Thought: God's love is shared in acts of kindness.
The chaplain who lived it told this story to a group in a meeting.
