A man sits on a bench just inside the Pearly Gates, watching the foot traffic come and go. In front of him the street is paved with gold.
St. Peter's at the gate arguing with a newbie who is pushing a loaded wheelbarrow.
Peter says, "It's against the rules. You can’t bring the gold in."
"I earned it. It’s mine. I'll be damned if I can't take it with me."
Peter replies, "They won't accept it down there either. I suppose there is no harm in letting you keep it. Come in."
The newbie wheels it inside and continues up the road.
“What’s with him?,” asks the man on the bench.
Peter answers, "Why he's all fired up to push in a load of pavers, I'll never know."
Part of a minister's job is to remind everybody to plan ahead. Talk to a lawyer, write a will, and make sure your estate goes where you want it to go — whether it's to family or elsewhere, because Heaven has no use for our accumulated wealth, and neither do we after we depart.
One frugal farmer with no heirs left the interest on her million-dollar estate to be annually divided among non-profits in her beloved small town. Who could have guessed that living a simple life could add up to such generosity? I bet she took her love and generosity in spirit with her.
Let's Pray: Dear God, let us carry our treasure into Heaven, and let it be love. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: Your heart is where your treasure is. It weighs nothing but it is everything.
