Title: Dear Universe
Date: March 15, 2017
Dear Universe, can you hear me when I pray to you? I have friends who pray to you. You cannot hear me, because you, sweet Universe, are a thing, and not a god, or God.
I quote: “The Universe is commonly defined as the totality of existence including planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space, and all matter and energy.”
“The broadest definition of Universe is that it is simply everything, while a narrower definition is that the Universe is limited to what can be observed. Similar terms include the cosmos, the world and nature…
“Scientific observation of the Universe, the observable part of which is about 93 billion light years in diameter, has led to inferences of its earlier stages. These observations suggest that the Universe has been governed by the same physical laws and constants throughout most of its extent and history. The prevailing cosmological model… describes the early development of the Universe…to have occurred [13.8] billion years ago.”*
My friends, who invoke the Universe when they pray, do so, I believe, because of the baggage attached to the word ‘God’. My friends are believers in the Higher Power, but language, concepts, ideas, cultural paradigms, histories, religions and theologies about God trip them up, making it difficult for them to pray to what they may conceive as too small or too mundane or just plain wrong, so instead they pray to the Universe, but the Universe is a thing. God is no thing.
Let’s Pray: Dear God, thank You. Amen.
Here’s a Thought: God is all, but all is not God.
