Every winter, at Sweetloaf ski resort, I look for Fred, the head ski instructor, so I can ski with him. He’s fun company, highly skilled, and always improves my style. A few years ago when I switched to new skis, in no time at all Fred adjusted my form to the new technology, and had me flying down the mountain feeling like I was twenty-two years old again.
In the summertime when I need a lunch, I eat at Fred’s harbor-side restaurant, The Indigo Moon, where I get a sandwich, a smile, and permission to sit on his harbor deck where I can write all afternoon, even after he closes. Fred’s one of those guys who, although we seldom hang out, has had an influence on my life. I’ve been thinking about those kinds of people — the peripheral types who’ve had an impact on me. There are business people, teachers, professors, a preacher, a Boy Scout leader, an actor, a storyteller, and other persons like Fred. All of these persons, while not mainstays in my life, taught me something, or believed in me, or gave me an encouraging word that changed my life.
We influence people in ways we don’t imagine. The Godly life isn’t just about going to church or saying prayers or acting holy. It’s about interacting with people, touching their lives where they live, and willingly giving something positive of ourselves to others, similar to the ways others have given to us.
Let’s pray: Dear God, help us build up one another, and selflessly pass on the gifts we’ve been given. Amen.
Today’s Thought Is: Pay encouragement forward.
